Pre-assessment:
Memory vs. Observational drawing

This lesson is to pre-asses student's background knowledge of observational drawing. What do they KNOW and UNDERSTAND from prior experience.

Today we explored the 'answers' to the Essential Question: "What are the reasons why we draw what we see?  We accomplished this by creating a 'Raw Ability' drawing of an Elmer's glue bottle (see picture inserts). This drawing consisted of folding a piece of drawing paper in half, labeling one side 'MEMORY' and the other 'OBSERVATION'. Secondly, each student was asked to visualize what an Elmer's glue bottle looked like, and then draw it. Lastly, they folded their memory drawing over to the observation side, and was asked to draw a 'real' Elmer's glue bottle, that was placed in front of them. For the big reveal each student opened their drawing paper, so that both drawings could create a side by side comparison clearly distinguishing the differences and similarities between observational and memory drawing. Students reflected on the essential question, paired up with a partner, and shared what they thought the reasons were why we draw what we see?

  1. we draw what we see for extra detail. In our memory we could only see so much of an object when i real life it is easier to draw realistically.

  2. we draw what we see for extra everything pretty much color shading and all of that is detail

  3. We draw what we see because its an option of someething to draw. You also see how muich different your picture can vbe from when you are thinking of the object or actually looking at it

We draw what we see because when we do this we get extra details, more procise shapes and better proportion. I was amazed when we compared the two drawings because they were so different and that the memory was very far off from the observation drawing

  5. We draw what we see for detail, simplified shapes, and proportion. Now that we started ovservational drawing in class, im excited to keep learning about it.

We draw what we see for the extra detail, shape ,and the proportion. i like this project because you get blown away by the difference of the drawings. it is very cool of the difference of the shape ,size, and texture

  8. We draw what we see because for detail proportion and for shapes. and i was surprised by the results because i didnt think it would be that much of a difference but, it really was and there was so much more proportion, detail and shapes.

  9. we draw what we see for detail, shape, texture and proportion.. my expeirance with drawing what you see was interesting because when i draw it from memory it had no detail and there wasnt anything right on the bottle..

  10. We draw what we see because when you draw when you are not looking at it you cant get the full detail and you are not positive of what it looks like.

  11. We draw what we see because if we draw what we see we get a lot more detail, shape, and also we get more proportion. By looking at my drawing from memory, and by drawing the same object but right infront of me there was a giant difference between the two drawings.

  13. We draw what we see because of shape, detail and proportion.
I saw on my observation that I drew better when it wasn't from memory. I never knew how big of a difference that was.

  14. We draw what we see for detail, shape, and proportion. I can't wait to do the new project. I was so suprised at the difference between my memory drawing and my observation. Your memory is blurry so the picture wont turn out as good as if you are looking at the object and drawing it.

  15. We draw what we see because you can see more detail and because when you see the actual object you see thats its much different and clearer from your own drawing.

  16. We draw what we see with more detail, porportion and shape. When i saw the difference betwwen my observasion and my memory, i was shocked. My memory was not clear so it was small and less detailed.

  17. The reasons why we draw what we see is for extra detail. Yesterday when I drew my memory and then my observation I saw a big difference between both of them. The observation looked more realistic with more details.

  18. We draw what we see for shape, detail and proportion. When i saw the diffrence from my memory and my obsevation i was schoked. Your memory does not have all the dtial that u can see when your actually looking at it.
